2005-05-08 - 3:01 a.m. What I'm listening to: the ambient noise of night, drunks screaming and coming home after a night at the bar. I just spun at a departamental house party. Was fun, except that I was trying out new gear. It didn't work as well as I'd hoped, and some undue improvisation was needed. I couldn't use the turntable because it skipped way too much. And some idiots on the floor decided it would be fun to all jump all at the same time, to jump the record on purpose. Assholes. One really annoying person from my department kept on bothering me and asking me stupid questions. Every party that she's at, she tries to take over the music, and says what should be played, etc. She even asked me if one disc was better than another, and said that it's an important question... Piss the fuck off. She should get the most annoying person in the world award-I mean she has the inborn talent to do this. Being that annoying takes a finely honed skill. There are few people in this world that I can't stand, and she's one of them. Everytime I run into her, regardless of what I'm wearing, she gives me the updown. Eww, that's just creepy. Where were you raised, a barn??? It's bad manners. When you're talking with somebody you make eye contact. At least that's what humans do. Jeeeeeez. At one point in the evening, she asked me to play something, and I replied 'yes, if you stand way over there'. What I meant was, dance further away from the turntable so it doesn't skip. I guess it came off as 'get the fuck away from me', which is what I really thinking anyway. Oh well. I saw one apartment today. It's a small room, sharing with three undergrads. It's a gorgeous place though, and as soon as I said that I'm a dj, they were more willing to accomodate my furniture. And when I got there, they were smoking, and offered me a toke. Very nice of them. I'm seeing another place on Monday, with my own office. The place that I saw today will be a party home, and I will have to work outside of home. With an office, I'll have the freedom to work at home, and keep most if not all of my books with me. We'll see what happens. The party was not as big as the last one in this space, and I feel like I've lost my touch. I was too rushed, and didn't have enough time at the beginning to work all the bugs out of my fingers before I started spinning. Oh well, I'll know better for next time. Bottom line: our department is really fucked up. I've heard this from outsiders, as well as from the inside. This becomes more factual with every gathering. On one hand I'm in this black hole of departamental socializing, but on the other hand I get to see the few normal people at the these parties. I guess it's just a matter of filtering the wierdos out.
