What I'm listening to: Martha My Dear
What a nice way to ease into the morning. But how could I not bring the White Album on vinyl from my parents' place? For shame, I guess cd will have to suffice for the mo.
How nice to puff away and wax poetics on the keyboard. Right now I'm working on my cv and cover letter for an awards fellowship or something. It's due today at 5pm. Jeez, with only a week's notice, and with everything else going on right now, it's pretty intense. I get the feeling that I'm getting a pretty good taste of academic life right now. Just a machine, no time to think, and then admin matters involving dinero pop out out of nowhere. What every happened to reading, writing, exchanging ideas, and wearing tweed sportcoats with suede patches?
This has been a pretty intense first year, looking back, can't believe that it's almost over. Before coming here, I used to think that the measure of somebody's character is how honest, sincere and trustworthy they were. Well, that still holds to a certain degree, but at this point I believe that the measure of somebody's character is how they deal with stress, because that is when you will see them at their worst.
One fellow in our department, has spewed out fundementally racist comments from time to time, but I've noticed that it's when he's at his most stressed. Overall he's ok, but the depths of his darkness surface at these points-it demonstrates what's he's ultimately capable of. Kinda like somebody who's basically honest, but when the chips are down will they sell you out to save their own skin?
Some people I often wonder why they are here. Why are they doing graduate study in Communications of all disciplines, but more importantly why are they doing graduate study at all. Will wonders never cease. I guess some people just end up here. An elder told me once that a lot of people are in graduate school because they can't hack it in the real world. It would seem that this is a false assumption, because this world is very real.
